The king of quackery promotion comes out against pseudo science!  Meanwhile Alberta Health Services leadership proves it can’t use a calculator (no surprise there).

It was a great day for me. One of those days where everything just comes together.  I sank  in my favorite easy chair, poured myself a very nice Bordeaux that had been hiding in my cellar, and opened up the paper to take in the latest stories of the day. News stories always go better with Bordeaux. But even the wine couldn’t prepare me for what I read on page A13 of today’s Herald.

The king of quackery promotion rails against junk science.

In an opinion piece entitled, Beware of junk science, Gwyn Morgan, former CEO of Encana Corp. rails against junk science. In the article, Mr. Morgan argues persuasively against pesticide paranoia, fears surrounding chemical fertilizer, organic food worship and the borderline hysteria, especially in Europe, of genetically modified foods. Got swine flu? CBC Radio says eat your mushrooms.

The H1N1 scare is certainly giving alternative medical practitioners an opportunity to promote all sorts of medical quackery. Only last month, the CBC was highlighting traditional aboriginal healing methods on national television (see ASkepticRTN: It’s flu season). We were told that traditional aboriginal healers used yarrow and other secret ingredients to provide an effective remedy that just happened to be available for sale in case the vaccines didn’t arrive in time.  The CBC has a history of promoting medical quackery of this sort and evidently, CBC Radio in Calgary felt the need to further contribute. Well, you have probably heard the story by now.

A Christian group has complained that the Calgary Zoo is displaying a religious icon, specifically, a statue of a dancing elephant that represents the Hindu god Ganesh. Jim Blake, National Chair of Concerned Christians Canada, sent a letter to the Calgary Zoo calling for the sculpture to be removed. The letter states: Read the rest of this entry »
